Go to Home Depot
or Lowes and get a set of "gate" hangars. They come with 2
"L-shaped" lag screws that screw into the gate post and 2
"strap hinges that bolt to the gate and slip over the lag
screws. Discard the gate straps (or save for another needy
project). |
Materials:
- 1 set "gate hangars" to fit
your rudder gudgeons.
- 1 piece 2" x 4" x 7 ft. long
- 2 pieces 1" x 4" 8" long
for spacers
- 2 pieces 1" x 4" 12" long
for crutch side pieces
- 20 2" deck or drywall screws
- 1 tube construction cement
- Before starting insure
the wood spacers are thick enough to produce a "crutch"
wide enough for your mast to fit in. If not, use
thicker wood or additional thin (plywood) spacers to
make the crutch wider.
Begin by assembling the "crutch" at one end of the
2" x 4".
|
|
Use construction adhesive
and 5 screws to attach each of the 8" long spacers
to
the sides of one end of the 2" x 4".
|
|
Use 5
screws and construction adhesive to attach the 12" long
side pieces on the top of
the 8" long 1" x 4"s . Make sure you "miss"
the screws holding the spacers.
Drill a pilot hole approximately 1/2 the diameter of the gate hanger lag
screws 4" from the other end of the 2" x 4"
Measure the distance between the tops of the rudder gudgeons on your
transom and drill another pilot hole this distance
above the first (center to center).
Screw the gate hangers into the
2" x 4". Paint the mast crutch it you wish and you are
finished!.
None of the materials used are critical so feel free to
substitute what you have available. |
